Shelly Allen is a longtime horse owner and the founder of Emergency Ready™, a collection of owner-level resources for equine emergencies.
Her work is shaped by decades of hands-on horse experience and formal equine first-aid training. The focus is simple: helping horse owners notice when something isn’t right, make safer first decisions, and communicate clearly with their veterinarian.
She began working with horses in 1991 and has spent years paying attention to the small changes that often show up before bigger problems do. Living in a rural area shaped the way she thinks about emergencies. When help isn’t close, early recognition and appropriate response matter.
Shelly completed basic and advanced equine first-aid training and instructor certification through Equi-First Aid USA, along with additional owner-level emergency training through Dr. Lizzie McCready’s Equine Emergency Training program. She periodically teaches hands-on workshops from her property in Vernon, Arizona, and creates online, self-paced resources for horse owners who want clear guidance without having to travel or sit through a class.
What people tend to appreciate about her work:
The goal isn’t to turn owners into clinicians.
It’s to help them notice change, make better first decisions, and bring their veterinarian in sooner rather than later.
“The lecture and hands-on work were both valuable. The sections on digestive issues and vitals were especially helpful, and taking vitals for the first time gave me real confidence.”
“I valued every part of this class. I left feeling prepared, supported, and confident, with every question answered. Shelly is such a clear and patient teacher.”
“This was a wonderful class. I highly recommend it to every horse owner, whether new or experienced. Thank you for educating us, Shelly.”

Emergencies can unfold fast, and they often fall on horse owners first. Clear, practical training helps you understand what’s happening, avoid common mistakes, and take safe, effective steps while you secure professional care. You don’t have to guess, hope, or freeze; you can act with confidence.
If you want to feel steady, capable, and ready when it matters most, this is where it starts.
